In a world where family structures are diverse and often complicated, the search for belonging and identity can lead individuals on profound spiritual journeys. Ross Johnston's story is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the quest for a father figure.
Conceived through artificial insemination and raised in a lesbian household, Ross's upbringing was far from traditional. Yet, it was the absence of a father that left a significant void in his life. At 16, he encountered Jesus, an event that would alter his path forever. This article delves into the religious aspects of Ross's journey, highlighting his struggles and triumphs as he navigated faith, family, and identity.
The Search for Fatherhood
Growing up without a father figure presented challenges for Ross. While he was surrounded by love from his mother and her partner, he felt a deep-seated longing for paternal guidance. This internal struggle was exacerbated by a lack of religious foundation; he had never been to church or learned about God until his teenage years. Ross reflects on this longing, saying, "Deep down in my heart, as I got older, especially when I came to the Lord, I was like, wow, that's why I felt lonely."
His realization came when he accepted Christ. Suddenly, the void he felt began to fill with the love of a heavenly Father. "When I met the Father, He became my father and He fathered me from 16 years old till now," Ross shares. This profound relationship with God provided the guidance and support he had missed throughout his upbringing.
Encountering God: A Life-Changing Moment
Ross's journey to faith began with a simple invitation to church from a friend. This marked the first time he had ever experienced live worship, and it profoundly impacted him. "I was an easy one. I said, ‘Presence of God. I feel great. I'm full of hope,’" he recalls. It was in this environment that he first felt the presence of God, a feeling he had longed for without knowing it.
As he engaged with the gospel, Ross discovered a language for his inner turmoil. He recognized that he was not just seeking a father but a relationship with God that would fulfill his deepest needs. "For the first time, I actually felt that I had language for that through the gospel," he explains.
Redefining Family: The Role of Faith
Transitioning from a secular upbringing to a life devoted to Christ brought about a profound redefinition of family for Ross. He acknowledges the cultural narratives surrounding LGBTQ+ issues and emphasizes the importance of truth grounded in scripture. Ross articulates, "If you don't walk in the design of God, you can't walk in the blessing of God." This conviction has guided his conversations with his mother, as he seeks to share his faith with love and clarity.
Despite the potential for conflict, Ross maintains a strong relationship with his mother, who has shown support for his ministry endeavors. He shares, "She sees the fruit of my life, and that has allowed our relationship to be on a healthy level while I share truth with her." This dynamic illustrates the power of love and truth working together in familial relationships.
